DJI Osmo 360: First impressions

My Osmo 360 arrived a few days ago, and I’ve tested it in multiple environments. Its dynamic range and resolution are amazing—even when compared to the Insta360 X5. (The X4 and X5 seem to be diffraction limited at their highest resolutions.) The single-lens mode is even comparable to the DJI Action 5 Pro, thanks to the larger sensor and brighter lens. UX and UI are nearly identical to that of Action 5 Pro.

Common issues:

  • There are many complaints about lens fogging issues, but I haven’t experienced any, even after soaking mine in water.

However, there seem to be quite a few missing and incomplete functions…

  • No vertical video nor square aspect ratio. (I know I can shoot panoramic video and crop it later, but having native support is better than none at all.)
  • No 8-bit video support. (While 10-bit is always superior in terms of quality, why did DJI completely omit 8-bit video?)
  • Even though I live in NTSC region with 60Hz main, Osmo 360 keep recommends to set frame rate to 25 or 50. I cannot understand why.
  • The desktop software, DJI Studio, has a terrible user experience and is a bunch of incomplete features.

    • Regardless of system locale, DJI Studio always sets the default project name in Chinese. Have they ever tested their own product in other locales?
    • UI texts are improperly wrapp
      ed.
  • 4K panoramic video is locked at 100 fps with no other options. Why is the limitation existing here?
  • There is only a single LUT available, D-Log M to Rec. 709, for Osmo 360 while DJI provides multiple LUTs for Action 5 Pro.
  • No internal HLG recording. I have to create HLG myself from D-Log footage.
  • No RAW panoramic imaging.
  • No plugins for FCPX or DaVinci Resolve.

More things:

  • I found that the direction of the magnetic mount is reversed compared to the Action 5 Pro. When I mount the Action 5 Pro in selfie mode, the Osmo 360 shows up its display. I have no idea why.
  • It supports RAW imaging (only for single lens, though), but it is not mentioned in the official specification.
  • It supports USB microphone, with audio level monitor in the UI. The official specification never mentions this.
There is RAW imaging, which saves 6400×4800 DNG image. But DJI’s official specification never mention this.
It even support USB microphone.

I hope DJI to release firmware upgrades very soon. The image quality itself is really amazing, beating all other consumer 360 cams, but the firmware and DJI Studio is a nightmare.
